My First Contortion Workshop - Day 1

Can You Say Teaching Promo Shot?! I Can!

So I had been asked by Charity, my former dance teacher, to come help teach her contortion workshop on Tuesday (today) and Thursday. It was a two hour long workshop and she wanted me to come and share any new ideas or training techniques I had and because the kids might do better with me teaching because I was someone new and they would want to impress me haha. So I agreed. After taking care of my Dad all day I drove to Lighthouse Dance Studio in Binghamton and arrived there around 5:30PM. There were only a few girls this time around because a lot of them couldn't make it until Thursday. They went through their warm ups and Charity basically handed them over to me which was great but I wasn't really prepared to take on the whole class.

Working on the Mirror Trick

It ended up being a lot of fun. I tried to work them as hard as I could without getting too crazy on the first day. I would have pushed them further but I wanted to get a feel for how the group worked. Generally they are really flexible girls with not a whole lot of strength to support their bends or balance for handstands and the like. So I tried to impress on them the importance of core work for contortion and did a lot of handstand conditioning stuff. We also worked on canes, snap dragons (where the feet are snapped behind the arm pits), standing balance poses, oversplits, active flexibility work, contortion push ups and various other stretching things. A lot of them were imbalanced. One side was much more flexible then the other so I tried to get them to work the other side. It was a very interesting group to work with but I really liked teaching everything. It took me a while to get into the lingo of teaching contortion because I had never verbalized it before. That came quickly and I can totally see myself doing this when I'm older. I love it.

Groovin' At the Cyber Cafe

After it was done Charity and I went out to the Cyber Cafe to get a quick bite to eat. We caught up a little more and listened to a cool blue grass band. Then I drove her home and went home myself! A fun end to this day for sure.
